Book Desert Book Drives
"PLACING BOOKS IN THE HANDS OF EVERY CHILD"
Book Desert Book Drives serve as a core component of stabilizing our efforts to end book deserts. Our work begins with having access to a limitless amount of books to provide to children, youth and families. "In middle-income neighborhoods the ratio of books per child is 13 to 1, in low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children" (Neuman, Susan B. and David K. Dickinson, ed. Handbook of Early Literacy Research, Volume 2. New York, NY: 2006, p. 31). To remedy this problem, we have partnered with small businesses, colleges and universities, nonprofits, athletic teams, faith-based organizations and individuals of all ages to hold book drives.
It's simple and anyone can hold a book drive to assist our efforts to keep the influx of books to the communities we serve coming. Books that are collected can be donated directly to us; or we partner with individuals and groups who want to hold book drives, as a launching point to bring our initiatives to their community. It's as easy as 1-2-3. 1: Find a location to collect books; 2: Create criteria for books to be donated (new or gently used, culturally relevant, age-specific); 3: Spread the word!
Thank you to our sponsors that have held Book Desert Book Drives.
